In relation to Windscribe

"Our goal is to deliver easy-to-use, yet powerful solutions that anyone may employ to circumvent censorship," says the company.

Windscribe is an attractive prospect, thanks to its newly redesigned apps, which are jam-packed with innovative features that provide genuine value to users. While streaming and customer service are limited, the generous free plan includes a massive 10GB of bandwidth, allowing you to test the waters before committing to a paid subscription.

If you believe what Windscribe advertises, you can get top-notch encryption and access to a myriad of streaming services for a remarkably inexpensive price. But are these claims accurate? Considering that there are so many VPNs available on the market that provide equivalent features at a greater price, these traits appeared to be far too good to be true. I had to see it for myself to believe how beautiful it really is.

Every component of the Windscribe application, including its security features, speed, and unblocking capabilities, was thoroughly analyzed to assess how effectively it performs as a whole. Additional tests included examining its ability to handle torrenting and putting it through a series of leak tests to see how well it operates. Additional testing was done on the free version to determine whether the 10GB data limit is sufficient for the average user.

Even though I was impressed by a lot of Windscribe's capabilities, the software falls short in a number of crucial areas, including performance, gaming, privacy, and customer service, among others There are unquestionably better alternatives to VPNs that offer a higher level of overall security and performance than the ones listed above.

Are you in a hurry? Here Are Some of My Most Important Findings

Connections to the most prominent streaming services are made possible using Windscribe. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it unblocked every service I attempted to access. See the full set of results for each of the websites I tested.

The speeds are usable, although they are not especially quick. I was able to stream in high definition, play games without interruption, and torrent massive (copyright-free) files in a short amount of time. On this page, you can view the results of the remaining speed tests that I conducted.

It has a respectable server network to its credit. Despite the fact that it does not have the widest server list, it does provide a number of intriguing countries. On this page, you may learn about the countries that are supported.

The security system is comprehensive, and it includes a wealth of functions. Among the security features are a kill switch, 256-bit AES encryption, leak protection, and an ad-blocker that may be configured by the user (R.O.B.E.R.T.). Learn more about how I made certain that your data was properly protected by visiting this page.

There are some legitimate concerns about privacy. Despite the fact that the company's strict no-logs policy has been shown in the past, its servers have been confiscated by federal investigators on several occasions. Explore the process by which the Ukrainian government gained possession of the Windscribe servers.

It offers native applications for Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android platforms. It makes no difference whether you use a mobile device or a desktop computer; you will have access to all the features. On this page, you may learn about the devices that are supported.

In China, it has proven to be effective. Windscribe is one of the few VPN services that may be used in China, according to the company. By going to this page, you can find out how well it works in other restrictive countries.

There is a free version with limited functionality. The free app has a data cap, and upgrading isn't prohibitively expensive, but it isn't inexpensive either. More information about the subscription plans can be found on the following page.

It is compatible with all major streaming platforms and may be accessed via the internet.

I was able to unblock Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and the BBC iPlayer, allowing me to watch without interruption. Because Windscribe employs proprietary spoofing technology (named Location Warp) to conceal your IP address, you were able to access geo-restricted streaming platforms with relative ease.

It also surprised me to find that the free Windscribe edition, which also makes use of Location Warp, allowed me to unlock all of these platforms. Sign up with your email address to receive 10GB of data per month for free, and a single tweet about Windscribe will win you an additional 15GB of free data. You will be able to broadcast in high definition for a little more than 7 hours with this configuration.

I tested Windscribe's streaming capabilities on a variety of devices, including my PC, iPad, and Android phone. Then, using Windscribe's native software on my Fire TV Stick, I put it through its paces and found it to be completely reliable.

However, one tiny drawback was that films took a little longer to load when using Windscribe than they did when using my home internet connection. The streaming quality, on the other hand, was never anything below HD throughout the experience. Neither the free nor the premium versions of the software caused any buffering problems for me.

Netflix Has Been Unblocked

I was able to access Netflix in the United States, as well as libraries in the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Australia, among other places. In addition to the premium service, all of these regions are also accessible through the free app, with the exception of Japan, which is only accessible through the premium service. As a first test, I connected to the Atlanta server and ran Netflix as a client. I chose an episode of Supernatural, and the entire show was played again in full HD without any buffering. I was impressed.

FOR: Consists with a profusion of complex characteristics.

Free plan with a monthly data allowance of 10GB

BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+ are all accessible through this service.

There are a variety of payment options.

OPPOSITION: There is no 24-hour or live-chat customer service available.

In the United States, there is no way to unblock Netflix.

While Windscribe is well-known for being a fun-loving company that provides entertainment to its users, the company also takes its users' privacy and security very seriously.

One of the key reasons why most people use this service is because it is outstanding and completely free. It also has a substantial 10GB data cap, making it one of the best free VPN services accessible. As a result of a bevy of useful features, you will learn that it is also one of the best VPN services available in general once you have signed up.

What you should be aware of is that this service is not without flaws, and we uncovered a few issues that could have an impact on your VPN pick. As a result, we recommend that you read our in-depth Windscribe VPN review to assess whether or not this is the perfect service for you.

The following are the Windscribe subscription options: Plans are $4.08 per month (for a total cost of $48.96 per year). Plan for 12 months at $4.08 per month

Windscribe's free service is one of the best because it offers 11 server locations and 2GB of data (boost that up to 10GB if you hand over your email). When compared to the competition, it is simply astounding to witness. Choose the rolling monthly plan for $9 per month, which decreases to a more manageable $4.08 per month if you commit to the service for a year.

Windscribe's applications and systems look amazing, are secure, and perform well in terms of preventing DNS leaks, to name a few characteristics. It is possible to disable the kill switch, and the encryption is robust; however, Windscribe is upfront about the fact that some logging takes place. While we would have liked to have seen an audit, this is a good first step.

It is possible to connect at reasonable speeds, with OpenVPN doing somewhat better than WireGuard. On a 1Gbps line in the United Kingdom, we were able to obtain 230-240Mbps with OpenVPN, and a similarly impressive 220Mbps on a similar line in the United States.

We were surprised to see that the WireGuard protocol had a speed reduction in the United States, with a maximum speed of only 150Mbps. In the United Kingdom, however, speeds of 430-480Mbps are more in line with expectations. It is not the fastest connection available but it is more than adequate for the majority of people who use broadband connections.

Windscribe's premium edition is excellent for streaming, as it unblocked practically every service we attempted to use. Although Windscribe has previously unblocked US Netflix, the major drawback is that it has been unable to do so in this instance.

Despite the fact that both the desktop and mobile apps are really basic, there is a lot going on and they function extremely effectively. In addition to favorites and a choice of protocols, you'll also get support for WireGuard.

Although Windscribe's ticket system ensures that you will receive a response from a knowledgeable member of the core development team, it means that you will not be able to get quick, easy help when you need it. This is exacerbated by the fact that the written articles and guides are not always up to date and accurate.

CAN YOU TELL ME HOW MUCH WINDSCRIBE COSTS AND IF THERE IS A FREE TRIAL OF WINDSCRIBE?

As previously mentioned, Windscribe has a free plan that is highly comprehensive. When joining up, you'll have access to servers in 11 different countries, up to 10GB of storage space (although this will be lowered to 2GB if you don't provide a valid email address), and an unlimited number of connections. For a complimentary service, this is a lot of money to give away.

Consider, on the other hand, how fantastic everything would be if you paid for Windscribe for Pro! (Note: Windscribe's statements appear on the upgrading page, not ours.)

You must choose a premium plan in order to get the most out of the service and to have access to all of the features it has to offer. All 110 Windscribe server locations can be accessed through this method, and customized IKEv2, OpenVPN, and WireGuard configurations can be created as well. Additionally, you'll get unlimited data as well as comprehensive access to R.O.B.E.R.T., Windscribe's proprietary malware-blocking technology.

The monthly subscription rate for Windscribe is only $9 per month, which is very reasonable. With an annual plan, the monthly cost drops to just $4.08 per month, saving you money over the long run. While not as low as Surfshark, this is an affordable price when compared to other top services – it is somewhat more expensive than our top-rated provider ExpressVPN but less expensive than other top services.

You do, however, have further options in this situation. 'Build a Plan' allows you to pick and select the servers you need for $1 per month using Windscribe's 'Build a Plan' functionality. Each of the servers you choose will offer you ten terabytes of data to experiment with, and you must select at least two of them to be successful.

As a result, if you choose two servers (let's say the United Kingdom and the United States), you'll start with 10GB for inputting your email address, followed by 10GB for each server you choose. The cheapest VPNs give 30GB of data for $2 a month, which is fair if you don't require additional servers. However, some of the cheapest VPNs offer their entire service for pennies more per month.

Add another $1 per month for unlimited data, though, and it starts to look more enticing — all the more so given that the Build a Plan is priced on a monthly basis and does not need a long-term commitment.

ScribeForce is another option to consider. The entire service, which is also billed monthly, can be purchased for $3 per month if you have a group of five or more persons who want to join forces.

Finally, for $8 per month for residential addresses and $2 per month for data center addresses, you can acquire a static IP address from a third-party provider. As a result, while it does not provide the same level of privacy as a dedicated VPN IP, it does ensure that your browsing is not tainted by someone else's questionable behavior and should result in significantly improved streaming capabilities due to the low likelihood of being flagged as a non-domestic connection by Netflix and other streaming services.

With payment options such as PayPal, credit card, Bitcoin, and gift cards, Windscribe is incredibly versatile when it comes to accepting your money – and with the proper configuration, you can save a significant amount of money without being tied to a long-term contract. Take, for example, the low-cost VPN competition.

WHAT LEVEL OF SECURITY DOES WINDSCRIBE PROVIDE, AND DOES IT LOG ACCESS?

Windscribe is equipped with a number of important security features, including: When it comes to encryption, Windscribe employs military-grade AES-256 encryption with SHA512 authentication, and when it comes to private keys, it employs 4096-bit RSA encryption with a one-time use policy.

Additionally, Windscribe is committed to protecting your data from leaks and applies a variety of measures to accomplish this goal, as described below. Kill switches, which prevent internet access if the VPN connection breaks, IPv6 traffic limits, and DNS redirection across the VPN are examples of such features.

We tested Windscribe's performance promises on a Windows 10 PC and found no evidence of DNS leaks – or any other leaks, for that matter.

For the purpose of evaluating the VPN's kill switch (known as the Firewall in Windscribe lingo), we manually terminated the connection during a browsing session. The switch was operational, and our internet connection was instantly severed as a result of this. Despite the fact that we were not informed of the disconnect, we were called as soon as the connection was restored — and there were no leaks during the interim.

Another safety element incorporated by the platform is R.O.B.E.R.T., which stands for "Responsible, Obey, Be Responsible, and Trustworthy." In addition to protecting you from viruses and trackers, this sophisticated domain and IP blocking solution also allows you to surf more swiftly on the internet.

Logging is quite restricted, consisting only of the total bandwidth utilized in a month and timestamp of your most recent action, which is used to identify accounts that are no longer active. Temporary connection details, such as the username, VPN server, duration and bandwidth utilized, as well as the number of devices connected, is also recorded – but this information is only stored in RAM and is therefore wiped after the session ends.

This commitment to privacy is demonstrated in a transparency report, which states that "exactly zero requests were compiled due to a lack of pertinent data," referring to requests for information from the DMCA and law enforcement agencies. A public audit, on the other hand, would be a welcome addition, as it would provide further assurance.

But it's worth mentioning that you can use the service for free by merely supplying your email address, which is something to keep in mind. The fact that this device has 2GB of storage space is plenty for whatever work you wish to perform in private makes it an excellent choice.

CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE SPEED OF WINDSCRIBE?

In its advertising, Windscribe touts itself as a fast VPN, and while it isn't nearly as fast as the quickest, it is nonetheless quite capable. To begin, we established a connection with the nearest servers, which were located in a data center in the United Kingdom and another in the United States. Our test lines were capable of transmitting data at rates of up to 1Gbps, and we measured connection speed by connecting to a range of sites and using a variety of services.

The findings from the United Kingdom were reassuring in nature. In our tests, OpenVPN delivered average download speeds of 180-240Mbps, outperforming a number of well-known services such as Surfshark but falling short of NordVPN and CyberGhost.

Similar results were found in trials conducted in the United States, with average download speeds of roughly 220Mbps. As a result, while OpenVPN speeds are not the quickest, they are typically considered to be satisfactory.

WireGuard was included as part of the Windscribe upgrade, but it didn't seem to make much of a difference in testing in the United States, where speeds actually dropped to 150Mbps, which is completely illogical. Given how things worked in the United Kingdom, it's possible that there was a glitch.

Interestingly, in the United Kingdom, the results were more predictable, with WireGuard obtaining an acceptable 430-480Mbps speed range in the test. That is fine, but it is still significantly slower than some of the competition, which includes CyberGhost, IPVanish, Mozilla, and NordVPN, all of which have exceeded the 700Mbps mark in their respective tests.

What is the effectiveness of WINDSCRIBE when it comes to STREAMING?

In order to access the geo-restricted content on the Netflix streaming service, many customers prefer to use a Netflix VPN. Unfortunately, Windscribe did not pass our testing when it came to accessing Netflix in the United States. This is a significant departure from our previous round of testing, and it is almost probably related to Netflix's latest technology improvements that prohibit the use of VPNs. Every VPN service has been affected, albeit the best have already identified at least half-decent workarounds.

For the purpose of putting Windscribe's streaming VPN to the test, we attempted to access US YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video from a range of different US and UK locations as well.

When it comes to streaming services, the BBC iPlayer is no exception; nonetheless, Windscribe had no issue providing us access each time we sought to access it through their service.

In the end, Disney+ and Amazon Prime were tested, and Windscribe was able to gain access to both without any issue, giving it an incredible full house when it comes to unblocking content.

Take note that these are premium service results; "WindFlix" servers are not available on free subscriptions, and there is no guarantee that any other servers will function well as a result.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO USE WINDSCRIBE FOR TORRENTING?

In terms of torrenting VPNs, Windscribe is a fantastic pick because it is totally clear about the platform's torrenting capabilities. On the Status page of the Windscribe website, you'll find a list of P2P server sites that are compatible with the program. This transparency is reflected in the software, which warns users when they are using an incompatible location.

Also available are free plans that let you torrent anonymously for security concerns, as well as premium plans that allow you to pay for the premium service with privacy-focused payment methods such as bitcoin and gift cards. Having said that, if you're looking for a VPN that is expressly designed for torrenting, you may be better off going with a more specialized option such as ExpressVPN or CyberGhost.

THE COST OF WINDSCRIBE'S DESKTOP APPLICATIONS IS UNDERSTANDABLE.

Probably the most noteworthy update since our last evaluation has been the addition of Windscribe 2.0, which includes the WireGuard protocol as well as a completely redesigned user interface. But the layout has remained mostly the same, with everything contained within a small (and now asymmetric) window and a great deal happening behind the scenes.

Windscribe is one of the few providers that maintain a back catalog of prior versions, which means that if the new update does not operate properly on your PC, you can revert to the previous stable version until the defect that caused the issue is fixed, which might take up to several hours.

When you access the default location list, you'll be presented with a list of countries. You may find out more about available servers by selecting one of the nations listed above. The selection expands to reveal available servers, some of which have interesting names like Tea and Crumpets for a server in London. A useful addition is the latency indicator, which provides a visual representation of the speeds of each server, allowing you to select the one that is most appropriate for your requirements.

It is possible to add countries to your Favorites list, and a smart latency indicator provides real-time information on the fastest routes. When you enable locations, you'll receive timely notifications on the health of your servers, connections, and updates, and you'll be able to arrange your servers by name, location, or latency - all of which are advantageous. Additional features like as split tunneling allow you to selectively route certain applications through the VPN while others are routed through your regular internet connection, which is great for torrenting.

It was impressive to see how well Windscribe's desktop program handled ingesting OpenVPN configuration files from third-party sources. All of your free plans are listed alongside Windscribe's existing plans, allowing Windscribe to serve as a central hub for all of your free plans, allowing you to move between them if your data allowance is running low.

By selecting Preferences from the drop-down menu, you can choose your preferred connection protocol. Examples include WireGuard, IKEv2, Stealth, OpenVPN TCP/UDP, and WSTunnel, to name a few. As an alternative to using DNS, you can utilize an API Resolution method to avoid the necessity for a proxy server such as an HTTP or SOCKS server.

If your gear is capable of supporting it, you can also use the technology to create a secure wireless hotspot or proxy gateway.

IN WHAT WAYS DO THE MOBILE APPLICATIONS OF WINDSCRIBE PRODUCE RESULTS?

Surprisingly, many of the 2.0 features were previously featured in Windscribe's mobile apps, and for those who loathe learning new software, it's all integrated in a similar manner.

A huge connection button, an image of a flag as the background, IP and chosen protocol information, and a list of available locations are all visible when using the service's Android VPN.

You can switch between the Favorites and Custom Configuration lists, as well as view specific Streaming servers if you choose. The Preferences window is crammed with useful options and features. A custom port can be specified, or you can connect via one of the OpenVPN protocols (UDP, IKEv2, Stealth, or TCP). There is also the possibility of using divided tunneling.

There are a variety of ways to interact with Android's Always On capabilities, including activating a cross-system kill switch, allowing GPS spoofing, and specifying local network traffic, among other things. When you connect to an unsecured network, you can use Network Whitelisting to have the Windscribe VPN automatically start when you do so.

Apart from a lack of split tunneling (which is an Apple issue, not a Windscribe one), Windscribe's iOS app is exactly as powerful and feature-rich as its Android counterpart. This is in contrast to many other providers' offerings, which are often lacking in this area.

Is it worthwhile to use the browser extensions provided by Windscribe?

Browser extensions are a very helpful component of Windscribe's product suite, and they are available for free. It is a solid and effective free add-on, which we suggest in our best Chrome VPN guide, and it allows for greater customization than other options — plus it is available for no cost.

As expected, the Chrome and Firefox extensions are just proxies (as opposed to ExpressVPN's peculiar add-on, which controls the desktop client) and do not provide any more functionality. However, because just browser traffic is affected, it is the most appropriate tool for performing simple location-changing actions on a computer.

Autopilot will automatically connect you to the best server available, and you'll be given the option of connecting to cities rather than countries. You'll also have a favorites list to keep track of the servers you like most.

Free browser extensions now include R.O.B.E.R.T., which means you'll get a simplified version of the full malware and ad-blocking solution that paying clients to get as well.

At long last, you'll be able to prevent WebRTC leaks, spoof your location and time zone to match that of your server, alter your user agent to avoid monitoring, and even delete cookies when a tab is closed.

In this regard, Windscribe's browser extension is among the best available – rivaled only by ExpressVPN's, which is equally powerful but operates in a fundamentally different manner.

WAS THERE ANY KIND OF CUSTOMER SUPPORT PROVIDED BY WINDSCRIBE?

Windscribe falls behind its competitors in this area since it does not provide 24-hour support. A dedicated support site, on the other hand, is available, and it has many setup instructions for a number of devices and operating systems.

Having said that, we found the FAQs to be insufficient as well, with certain sections, such as the instruction on how to configure browser extensions, being out of date by many years. If you are unable to locate what you are looking for, you may contact assistance by email or by submitting a ticket through a web form.

StrongSwan's Android recommendations were quite useful since they provided step-by-step directions on how to connect to IKEv2 through the StrongSwan app or via OpenVPN through OpenVPN for Android.

The fact that all support inquiries are handled in-house ensures that the response you receive is well-informed and more than adequate.

FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS FROM WINDSCRIBE

Windscribe is a competitively priced, feature-rich, and user-friendly program that can be used by even the most unskilled users. Despite the fact that the corporation is open about its commitment to privacy, its free plan is one of the most comprehensive we've come across.

Despite this, its support capabilities are limited, and the inconsistencies that showed throughout our performance tests were alarming, to say the least. Nonetheless, with such a fantastic free version available, we strongly advise everyone to download and give the service a shot.

Windscribe may not be able to match the high standards set by ExpressVPN, which has a massive server network, perfect speed and performance, and 24-hour customer service, but it makes a commendable effort in the process.

Windscribe is a paid service, but how much does it cost?

When you consider the cost of the yearly subscription, Windscribe is a reasonably priced VPN service. It will cost you $4.08 per month, and there is no restriction on the number of simultaneous connections.

Is Windscribe a reliable source of information?

Yes. Windscribe VPN protects your data with military-grade encryption and a plethora of secure tunneling technologies to keep it safe. Furthermore, it does not save any logs or any other personal information.

Is Windscribe VPN compatible with China?

This is possible because Windscribe supports two tunneling protocols, WStunnel and StealthVPN, both of which have been shown to be capable of bypassing the Great Firewall of China on occasion. See also our list of the top VPNs for China.

Is it possible to use Windscribe for free?

Yes. There is a fantastic free version of Windscribe VPN that provides you with 2GB of data each month. If you register with your email address, on the other hand, you will receive a total of 10GB of data.
